Bring your best friend to Greenwood Grange

What’s a holiday without your four-legged friend? We love dogs here at Greenwood Grange and do everything we can to make their stay here friendly and welcome – whether that’s suggesting places you can take them on walks and days out, or offering our pet sitting service to keep them company should you wish to leave them in your cottage alone.

This September we’re celebrating our dog-friendly month. Of course, we welcome them all year round, but you can bring them for free during in September*.

Walks

Literally opposite us here at Greenwood Grange you’ll find the leafy and vibrant Thorncombe Woods – a great walk for you and your dog. Adjacent to Hardy’s Cottage – the birthplace of Thomas Hardy – the woods stretch out to a massive 26 hectacres.

Over in West Dorset you’ll find the beautiful Lulworth Cove, which makes for a great day out with your dog. With fantastic views, a National Trust car park, and plenty of amenities, it’s a wonderful walk.

And if you want to view one of the wonders of Dorset that’s a little further afield, then make sure to take a trip to Old Harry Rocks. A more challenging walk, but well worth it for you and your dog!

Pubs

Whether you’ve enjoyed a day out walking, or simply sat back and relaxed here at Greenwood Grange, you may fancy a trip to the pub with your pet.

The Blue Vinny is one of our closest pubs, has exceptional food and is dog-friendly. Meanwhile, The Oak, at Dewlish, has a range of real ales, and even has its own pub dog!

Here’s a list of other dog friendly venues near us…

Beaches

We’re exceptionally lucky that Dorset has so many dog-friendly beaches to explore. One of our closest is Bowleaze Cove, in Weymouth, and welcomes dogs all year round.

Another with 12-month access is Durdle Door is one of the most breath-taking sights in the county. You’re invited to bring your dog to Durdle Door East and Durdle Door West to walk your dog.

Here’s a full list of other beaches to visit locally, with information on year round access, restricted beaches and even those that dogs are banned from using…

National Trust

Dorset is filled with fantastic National Trust locations, many of which welcome your dog…

Kingston Lacy is a lavish family home, built to resemble an Italian Palace, with impressive grounds. Well worth a visit.

Between May and September, dogs are welcome at Studland Bay – a National Trust beach, with a great café.

Tourist attractions

Whilst walks, pubs and even National Trust sites are fantastic – what about the small people in your lives that might just want to go to a tourist attraction and play the day away?

Thankfully there are several tourist attractions in Dorset that welcome dogs. The Dinosaur Museum combines life-sized reconstructions of dinosaurs with fossils and skeletons. And the best bit? Well behaved dogs are welcome.

Take a trip back in time on the Swanage Railway – one of our fellow winners at the Dorset Tourism Awards (where we won gold). Travel through the Purbeck countryside and take in the views of Corfe Castle. Listed as a dog friendly attraction by Visit Dorset, which also has a range of other suggestions here…

Kennels are expensive!

Another great reason to bring your pet with you? Well, leaving them home can be costly! The website www.job-princes.co.uksurveyed 10 random kennel and pet boarding firms at various locations across the UK. Some charged as more than £300 for a two week stay…

Also, every firm made it clear that pets are only accepted if they have up to date vaccines and a kennel cough vaccination too, along with proof of their treatments.

Home boarding can be an even more costly option. Read the full article here…

Staying at Greenwood Grange

Almost half of our properties are dog friendly and our grounds include a fully enclosed dog exercise area. If you’re visiting somewhere during your stay that’s not suitable for your pet, and you think they’d like some company, then we can arrange a dog-sitter.

Upon request we can provide feeding bowls, mats and even leads; you’ll also find hose pipe on site for washing muddy paws.

Finally, you needn’t compromise on luxury – our Durbaville cottage is dog friendly and even has its own hot tub.

As previously mentioned, in September we’re celebrating dog friendly month, which means your dog can stay for FREE on a stay of three nights or more. Visit here to find out more…

Finally, here are some tips for travelling with your pet…

  • Plan your journey so you can stop and exercise your pet
  • Pack plenty of supplies – so your dog has all their favourite treats
  • Ensure their collar has a tag with your contact details
  • Make them comfy in our accommodation – perhaps bring their bed or a favourite toy
  • Trips – if you do decide to venture out without your dog, plan your visits around their needs
  • Microchips and vaccines – keep them up to date

We look forward to welcoming you and your dog very soon here at Greenwood Grange.
